ABATTOIR’S RENEWAL

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, OFFICES AND ATELIERS ON THE SPREE
ACADEMIC WORK 2014
Politecnico di Milano – Architectural Design Studio
Site project: Berlin (GE)
Supervisor Arch. Pierfranco Galliani
with Stefania Cozzi and Giulia Gerola

The project is located in the area of the former central slaughterhouse in Berlin. The area, bordering on the east by the railway network, north of the Velodrome and west with its historic urban fabric, had a strong potential to reinvent the urban fabric, restoring an abandoned cultural heritage that still has great architectural value. The project starts from inserting into the fabric, facilitating access to the area from the main directions, excluding internal carriage and solving the problem of altitude variation by sloping ground or walkway work (see Southern Connection). Specifically, the intervention envisages the upgrading of existing pavilions (without the nature of the same) and the construction of newly-resident, non-contracted, office, commercial and atelier residences. The deployment of the built-in so that part falls hold a green area of relevance. The logic of the functional mix is followed, which allows continuous activity.
